Richards-Ross, Merritt, Carter Win Big at Track Town Classic

Published by the Edmonton Journal on July 12, 2015

The headliners delivered as advertised at the Track Town Classic on Sunday at the U of A’s Foote Field.

For starters, U.S. sprint stars Sanya Richards-Ross and Lashawn Merrit won the women’s and men’s 400-metre races, respectively, both covering the one-lap race in respectable times and with relative ease.

Richards-Ross, the reigning Olympic champion from the 2012 Summer Games in London, ran her race in 50.47, seriously challenged only by Jessica Beard of the U.S., who ran a 51.03. Canadian heptathlete Brianne Theisen-Eaton was fourth in 52.33, a decent time for her in what was a tune-up meet for her.

Richards-Ross, who surprisingly finished fifth in her speciality at the U.S. Nationals in Eugene, Ore., and did not qualify for the World Championships in Athletics in August, has begun to dial back her training intensity and volume, on the theory her sub-par race at Nationals was a function of over-training.

“I wanted to be in the 50 (second) range, or sub-50,” Richards-Ross said. “These kind of meets, even though they’re fantastic, sometimes it’s hard to get all the way up (psyched up).
