USA CHAMPION MOSER WITHDRAWS FROM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

MOSCOW (09-Aug) -- American 1500m champion Treniere Moser has withdrawn from the 14th IAAF World Championships which open here tomorrow at Luzhniki Stadium.  Moser, 31, said through a blog post that she had partially ruptured a hamstring tendon.

"I have a vertical tear through the muscle belly of my left hamstring," the four-time USA 1500m champion wrote.  "We think the initial injury occurred about three weeks ago in the Monaco Diamond League.  I knew something wasn't right but I thought I could get over it, then the London Diamond League 10 days later led to the rupture.  I just got the MRI this past week which confirmed the extent of the injury."

In the Monaco 1500m race (19 July), Moser finished 13th --and last-- in 4:07.42, while four of her American compatriots --Jenny Simpson, Brenda Martinez, Shannon Rowbury and Gabriele Anderson-- all broke 4:02 in the same race.  At the London contest over 3000m (26 July), Moser failed to finish.

Moser explained that she originally thought that the injury would sufficiently heal in time for these championships.  She is here in Moscow with the team, her training partner Mary Cain (who is also on the USA 1500m squad), and her coach Alberto Salazar.

"I really thought I could get healthy for Worlds," Moser explained.  "I had no idea of the severity of the injury until I had an MRI done.  As much as I wanted to race, the best sports doctor in Europe strongly advised me not to run Worlds. Only recently did it become certain that If I tried to race I would risk further injury or permanent damage. At that point it was a matter of letting USATF know right away so they could get the next girl to take my place."

The "next girl" would be Sarah Brown, who finished fifth in the USA Outdoor Championships.  Although she was beaten in that selection race by both Shannon Rowbury and Kerri Gallagher, neither woman is in a position to replace Moser.  Rowbury is already on the USA squad in the 5000m, and Gallagher lacks the World Championships "A" qualification standard of 4:05.50 necessary to allow her to join teammates Simpson (the defending world champion), Cain and Cory McGee.  Brown, the former Sarah Bowman, ran 4:05.27 last May.

Of course, Moser is disappointed to miss the World Championships.  Before this season, she had contemplated retiring from the sport, but joined Salazar's Nike-sponsored Oregon Project training group and was enjoying a renaissance as an athlete.  She ran strong personal bests of 4:02.85 for 1500m and 15:11.00 for 5000m this season, and her national 1500m title was her first in six years.

"Honestly, It's been very hard," she lamented.  "I was absolutely devastated by the news.  I had trained incredibly hard for the last year to compete for this one week in Moscow and to give up my spot was very difficult to do, especially since there is no World Outdoor team to make next year.  However, I have great coaches who have been positive and are helping me do everything I can to get healthy.  I have been responding well to my treatment so I am hoping to be healthy enough to run a fall road race."
