Run Faster, Run Stronger This WinterPublished by
Five Tips for Winter RunningPosted by Chelsea Reilly on December 16, 2013 Lacing up your running shoes can be tough during the winter. The days are short and temperatures are dropping. If you are an early riser, it’s usually dark outside as you begin your pre-work run. And the sun sets as you leave the office too. What to do, what to do… 1. Hop on a TREADMILL: don’t hesitate to stay inside A lot of us runners are loyal to the roads and trails. I get it. Why would you ever subject yourself to the treadmill if you can run outside? I prefer to be on the trails just like the next hard-core athlete; but running outside in the dark or in icy conditions can be unproductive and just plain dangerous. When its pitch black out, below zero, and the roads are icy, download some new tunes and zone out on the treadmill. It’s not so bad – trust me. 2. If you must run outside, LAYERS are your friend The key to running in cold weather: layers. My go-to outfit during the winter: sports bra, tights, long sleeve dry fit, waterproof shell or windbreaker, hat, and gloves. As you warm up and pick up the pace throughout your run, you can peel off the layers. 3. Work on the LITTLE THINGS The wintertime is the perfect opportunity to work on the little things. If you aren’t feeling fired up to brave the elements, focus on core work, flexibility, and core work. Try my Pilates Core Routine and start incorporating Phil Wharton’s Active Isolated Stretching into your daily routine.
