What We Learned in Glasgow - Day 1

By Scott Bush

The first day of the Glasgow Diamond League meeting lived up to its billing, as 10,000+ Scottish citizens proved the Commonwealth Games later this summer should be a major success.

McCorory Beats Ross-Richards and the Field

After putting up a dominating performance at USA Outdoors, where she ran a world leading time of 49.48 to edge American rival Sanya Richards-Ross (who finished second in 49.66), Francena McCorory (USA) put on another show Friday, running the third fastest time in the world this year with her 49.93 victory. McCorory dominated from start to finish, besting Richards-Ross by nearly half a second, proving she’s the top 400m in the world, no questions asked.

Not only did McCorory beat Richards-Ross (again), but she edged Jamaican Novlene Williams-Mills, who could have made an argument as the world’s best before July 1 hit. Williams-Mills finished third in 50.60 and well behind both McCorory and Richards-Ross.

The rest of the season should be fun to watch. McCorory gets after it every time out and with a national title under her belt, a world leading time and a handful of wins (including indoor gold), it seems as though we have a changing of the guard with the former Hampton star taking over top billing heading into 2015 and 2016.

Eaton Upsets Tinley for Second in Men’s 400m Hurdles

Ashton Eaton (USA) focused much of his season thus far on the 400m hurdles. The decathlon world record holder mixed up his focus this season and saw steady improvement the first few times out over the 400m hurdle event. Coming in to Friday’s meet, Eaton ranked 13th in the world with a PR of 48.94.

With a strong start and consistency throughout the entire race, Eaton found himself in second place to Javier Culson (PUR) in 48.69, shooting up to sixth in the world. His runner-up effort also placed him ahead of top American and USA Outdoor champion Michael Tinsley, who placed third in 48.91. While Eaton shifts his focus to the 110m hurdles and jumps the rest of the season, his 400m hurdle performance leaves many American track and field fans wondering just how much faster can he go.

Hoffa Keeps American Shot Dominance Alive

While the United States’ grasp on men’s shot put dominance starts to wane a bit, as the top Europeans and New Zealanders gear up their season towards the European Championships and Commonwealth Games, Reese Hoffa came up big in Glasgow, launching a new season best of 21.67m to win the event.

Hoffa edged rival David Storl (GER), who finished second in 21.38m and seemed to injure himself. Tom Walsh (NZL) placed third in 21.23 to set a national record, while Joe Kovacs (USA) placed fourth. Hoffa continues America’s triumphant performances in Diamond League action.

One more positive note – Ryan Whiting (USA) returned to action. While he finished far back in ninth, the reigning World Indoor Champion came away confident, knowing it takes time to find the rhythm he’ll need to come away with dominating performances again. This is a long season still with many big meets ahead, so it seems only a matter of time before Whiting is back competing for wins.

Bartoletta Soars Yet Again in Long Jump

The USA 100m champion Tianna Bartoletta has shown since early June why should could very well end up being the top long jumper of the 2014 season. Despite losing to American rival Brittney Reese at USA Outdoors, Bartoletta has soared 6.93m+ four separate times since June 8. While her best of 7.02m came in Oslo a month ago, she nearly bested it Friday with her winning 6.98m performance. She now owns the top four marks in the world and shows no signs of slowing down.

Hassan Beats Aregawi

Sifan Hassan (NED) outkicked Jenny Simpson (USA) last week in Paris, running to a new PR of 3:57.00, a time that shocked the Dutch athlete. Friday in Glasgow, Hassan beat reigning world champion Abeba Aregawi (SWE) in a furious sprint to the finish, crossing the line first, 4:00.67-4:00.94. For the past year, Aregawi seemed almost unbeatable. With Hassan’s big boost in confidence from Paris, which gives her the fastest time in the world this season, it seems as though Aregawi now has her hands full as the European Championships kick off in one months time in Zurich. Here we go!

Check back Saturday, as we recap what we learned from day 2 of the Diamond League Glasgow meeting.
