Olympic Hopeful Brittany Smith Throws World-Leading Mark in Shot Put

Published by Vidette on January 25, 2015

Olympic hopeful and Redbird alumna Brittany Smith has been working internally with the ISU athletics program since the end of her collegiate career. Smith has been training on her own to compete professionally. After a personal-best and world-leading throw last weekend at Illinois Wesleyan, Smith is looking forward to competing in some big-name meets, and possibly signing with a sponsor or two.

What was going through your mind after you released what was going to be your world-leading throw?

When I saw it land, I didn’t even know how far it went. It was actually kind of weird because once it dropped everyone went quiet. It was the moment they called out the distance (19.01 m; 62.4 feet) that I went nuts. I was so excited.

Did you have any friends or family there to witness your throw?

Mahnker [Dahnweih], Jianna [Williams] (current and former ISU throwers), and my mom were there to see it. My mom’s busy a lot and I don’t make her come to my meets, but she was able to make it last week, and it was the perfect time for her to see me.

How do you feel about being the current world-leader in the shot put?

It’s exciting, but the season is young.
