What We Learned: Florida Relays

Bowie, Harris, Price Put on a Show

By Scott Bush

The Pepsi Florida Relays took place Friday, where a star-studded cast of pro sprinters and hurdlers opened up their outdoor seasons in style. With outdoors getting underway, a handful of world-leading times were put up and a few early battles set the tone for the season ahead. Here's what we learned:

Bowie Continues to Dominate

The first half of the 2014 season could easily have been called the "Season of Tori." Tori Bowie took the season by storm, running world leaders in both the 100m and 200m, proving America had another sprint phenom on their hands. Then injury struck and Bowie couldn't regain the form she carried early on, thus shutting down the season.

On Friday afternoon in Gainesville, Bowie made a statement to the world that 2014 was no fluke. Against a solid field, Bowie cruised to victory in the 200m, winning in a world-leading time of 22.61, the third fastest performance of her career. Not only did Bowie win by nearly a half second, but she did it against a mild headwind. Needless to say...she's back.

Harris Wins an Early Season Hurdle Battle

The main attraction Friday was easily the men's hurdles. With a number of top-ranked 110m hurdlers squaring off, including Olympic and World Champions in David Oliver and Jason Richardson, the event promised to be both fastest and closely contested.

The stacked field didn't let fans down, as Aleec Harris came up big at the line, leaning to a narrow victory over runner-up Richardson and third place Oliver. How close was it? See for yourself.

13.23 - Aleec Harris
13.24 - Jason Richardson
13.25 - David Oliver
13.42 - Dwight Thomas

Price Continues Success Over 800m

Last year, Chanelle Price ran an impressive indoor season, which she capped with a gold medal in the 800m at the IAAF World Indoor Championships. This year, Price competed just once indoors, starting her season a bit later this time around.

Despite the later start, Price opened her two-lap outdoor campaign with an impressive win, running a world-leading mark of 2:00.62, edging 2013 NCAA indoor and outdoor champion Natoya Goule by just over a second. Even better for Price, her performance is the fastest she's ever run in April.

Moline Shows Good Fitness with 400m PR

Olympic 400m hurdler Georganne Moline didn't have a chance to run against the fastest collegiate athletes Friday in the open 400m, but she did find enough competition in the second heat to run a new personal best. The former University of Arizona standout won her heat by over a second in 52.08, besting her former outdoor best by nearly a second and breaking her overall (from indoor) PR by .01.
