The Oregon Relays kick off today in Eugene, where a number of pro distance runners get their outdoor season underway. As usual, the middle distance events highlight the schedule, as select pros take on some of the top talent from the University of Oregon.

This year’s headliner, Mary Cain, kicks off her 2015 outdoor campaign looking to rebound from a tough finish to her indoor season. Cain, who’s entered in the women’s 1,500m, ran 2:02.75 for 800m, 2:38.25 for 1,000m and 4:31.31 for the mile in back-to-back-to-back weekends at the end of January and early February before shutting down for a few weeks to recover from illness.

Cain enters this weekend’s action hoping to use the race as a way to test her fitness, get back on the start line and prepare for the long season ahead. The18 year old faces a number of top Oregon stars, including Alli Cash, Nikki Hiltz and Annie Leblanc. 4:14 1,500m runner and steeplechase standout Alexi Pappas is also entered.

While Cain grabs the pre-race headlines, her Nike Oregon Project teammate Treniere Moser enters the women’s 800m seeking to build off her impressive indoor results. Moser finished second at the New York Armory Track Invitational in late January in the 800m, narrowly losing to Ajee’ Wilson 2:01.63-2:01.79. She followed up with a 2:37.86 1,000m win at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix and a 4:27.49 runner-up mile effort at the NYRR Millrose Games, each of which were a new personal best.

In the two-lap race outdoors, Moser owns a best of 1:59.15. While she’ll have good competition from Oregon freshman star Raevyn Rogers, Annie Leblanc and Samantha Murphy, she’s clearly the class of the field and running under 2:03 would be a very good day.

In the women's steeplechase, 2012 Olympian Bridget Franek takes on multi-time Oregon All-American Megan Patrignelli, as Franek seeks to make a statement that she's back among the top contenders for a Team USA spot later this year.

The top men’s event, the 1,500m, sees former Duck and NCAA Champion Mac Fleet return to Hayward Field. Fleet, who trains with the Oregon Track Club Elite hopes to start his season with a win, propelling him forward to a season where he challenges for a spot on the U.S. roster for the IAAF World Outdoor Championships in Beijing.

Fleet finds competition from fellow pro A.J. Acosta, Canadian Luc Bruchet and Oregon freshman Blake Haney. They’re joined by future University of Oregon runner Matthew Maton, who’s running unattached after announcing his departure from his high school team earlier this month. Brooks Beast Mark Wieczorek, traditionally an 800m specialist, is also entered.

Rounding out the top pro competition, Team Run Eugene’s Dan Kremske and Dan Quigley look to improve their 5,000m bests in a strong men’s 5,000m field. They’ll face Oregon’s Jake Leingang and Jeremy Elkhaim among others. Similarly, OTC Elite’s Charles Jock seeks to lower his 400m best from 46.30, entered in the men’s 400m.
