2015 United Airlines NYC Half Entry Drawing Completed for Race on Sunday, March 15, 2015

Press Release

20,000 runners set to participate, including American distance star Molly Huddle who will headline the professional women’s field and former New York Giants player Tiki Barber who will run the 13.1-mile race on behalf of charity

New York, December 10, 2014—The 2015 United Airlines NYC Half runner field was selected in an entry drawing held on December 9. The 10th running of the race on March 15, 2015 is set to feature a field of 20,000 of the world’s top professional athletes and a vast range of competitive, recreational, and charity runners.

Highlighting the professional field will be U.S. Olympian and multiple American record-holder Molly Huddle. Leading an inspiring group of charity runners will be former New York Giants football player Tiki Barber.

“We are thrilled to welcome thousands of runners to the beginning of their United Airlines NYC Half journey,” said Wittenberg. “Among them, we are pleased to announce American distance running sensation Molly Huddle for the professional women’s field, and former Giants star Tiki Barber as a notable charity runner in this first race of our 2015 NYRR Five-Borough Series. Molly and Tiki will join, and surely inspire, thousands of other runners making the memorable 13.1-mile tour through Manhattan.”

The United Airlines NYC Half brings together runners from throughout the five boroughs and around the world. The field is made up of both guaranteed and non-guaranteed entrants. Runners received guaranteed entry through a variety of methods, which are detailed here on the official race page. Non-guaranteed entrants were secured through the drawing. The application period for all entrants opened on October 12, 2014, and closed on December 3, 2014.

15,498 runners were added to the race field through the non-guaranteed entry drawing, selected from 35,021 applications. The selected runners represent approximately 44% of non-guaranteed applicants.

The first professional athlete announced for the race, Molly Huddle, 30, of Providence, RI, added multiple achievements to her already impressive running résumé this year, including her historic victory at the 2014 Oakley New York Mini 10K, where she set the American all-women’s 10K record and became the first American champion since 2004. Her dominant streak continued when she lowered her own 5000-meter American record by two seconds to 14:42.64 at the 2014 Herculis Diamond League in Monaco. The 2012 Olympian and 14-time national champion claimed the 2014 USA Running Circuit series title with victories at the USA 7-Mile Championships, USA 20K Championships, USA 5K Championships, and the .US National 12K, the same race in which she ran an all-time world best for the distance in 2013. Huddle will return to the half-marathon distance for the first time since her debut at the distance in 2014 NYC Half, where she finished third with a time 1:09:04, the fastest American performance this year.

Football great Tiki Barber, the New York Giants all-time rushing leader and current co-host of CBS Sports Radio’s morning show, will run his first-ever half-marathon at the 2015 United Airlines NYC Half. He will be running to raise money on behalf of The Fresh Air Fund, a not-for-profit agency that provides free, unforgettable summer experiences to New York City children from low-income communities. Barber has been a member of The Fresh Air Fund’s Board of Directors for 10 years. Barber recently caught the road-running bug and participated with his wife, Traci, in the 2014 TCS New York City Marathon—his first-ever marathon—on behalf of New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia and his wife  Amber’s PitCCh In Foundation; he finished in a time of 5:14:37. Barber will join the approximately 2,500 runners raising money for charity at the 2015 United Airlines NYC Half.

The United Airlines NYC Half official charity partner program has launched. Runners who were not accepted through the drawing, and those who did not apply during the application period, can still run the race by joining NYRR's Team for Kids, which raises vital funds to support NYRR’s free youth running programs, or through an official United Airlines NYC Half charity partner. Runners who have been accepted can also raise money for their favorite charity—including Team for Kids, any official charity partner, or the charity of their choice—by using NYRR’s partner fundraising platform powered by CrowdRise. More than 100 official charity partners will participate in the 2015 United Airlines NYC Half. Approximately $5 million was raised by 2014 NYC Half charity runners to help hundreds of nonprofit organizations support their missions and services.

A total of 20,828 runners crossed the finish line of the 2014 NYC Half, making it the largest NYC Half yet. Runners from more than 65 countries and all 50 states participated.

The 2015 United Airlines NYC Half will be broadcast live locally on ABC7.
