Americans Taylor, Nelvis Continue to Soar

By Scott Bush

The Ostrava Golden Spike meeting brought together top international competition Tuesday in the Czech Republic, where fans saw Usain Bolt dominate into a slight headwind, winning the men's 200m event in 20.13. Bolt's mark edged out runner-up Isiah Young by over two-hundreths of a second, giving him the fourth fastest mark in the world this year.

Americans Christian Taylor and Sharika Nelvis threw down terrific marks in their respective events, keeping momentum going after successful IAAF Diamond League opening efforts last week in Doha. Taylor easily won the men's triple jump with a best of 17.52m. While his mark fell short of his 18.04m best in Doha, his mark was the fourth best jump in the world this season, giving him two of the top four.

For Nelvis, who placed second behind fellow American Jasmin Stowers in Doha over the 100m hurdles last week, Ostrava gave the former Arkansas State standout another chance to prove she's a top contender to not only earn a spot on Team USA, but challenge for a medal in Beijing. Nelvis got off to a solid start and continued to build throughout the race, finishing .01 off her personal best, crossing the line in 12.55. Her mark gives her two of the top six performances in the world this year.

American Young earned another runner-up in the sprints, finishing second in the men's 100m, where he placed behind Jamaican Asafa Powell, who continues to have a tremendous season in the 100m event. Powell edged out Young 10.04-10.13.

From top to bottom, the javelin was the star attraction of the evening. Kenyan Julius Yego threw the second best throw in the world this year, heaving the spear 86.88m in the win. He bested rivals Thomas Rohler (Germany) and Tero Pitkamaki (Finland). Rohler's 85.36m runner-up performance ranks him fifth best in the world this season, while Pitkamaki couldn't capture the magic he found in Doha, where he won in the world leading best of 88.62m.

In the women's 400m hurdles, Zuzana Hejnova edged fellow Czech Denisa Rusolova 55.13-55.45, as both athletes put up top ten times in the world this season.

Bohdan Bondarenko (Ukraine) and Marcin Lewandowski (Poland) picked up big wins. Bondarenko lept 2.24m to win the men's high jump, as four other competitors lept the same mark. Lewandowski edged Asbel Kiprop to win the men's 1,000m, 2:17.25-2:17.38.

The next big international meet takes place this coming weekend, as the world's best conveine in Eugene at the Nike Prefontaine Classic on Friday and Saturday.
