INDIANAPOLIS - Galen Rupp (Portland, Ore.) has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after setting the 3,000m indoor American record of 7:30.18 at the IAAF XL Galan Indoor Meeting in Stockholm.

Rupp’s time in the 3,000m set a meet record and garnered Rupp his second world leading mark of the season, as he already owns the fastest time in the mile.

Rupp knocked off more than two seconds from Bernard Lagat’s previous American record of 7:32.48, which he set in 2007.

Now in its 12th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on www.usatf.org. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

CONFERENCE WRAP-UP
NCAA Division I conferences dominated the weekend's news in U.S. track and field. Here's a rundown of the major happenings:

SEC -- Marquis Dendy of Florida jumped a world-leading 8.25m/27-0.75 on his second attempt in the LJ and then added an 8.22m/26-11.75 and an 8.24m/27-0.5 for good measure. LSU's Aaron Ernest also twice raced to a WL in the 200, going 20.59 in the prelims and then 20.53 in the final.

Fellow Tiger Kimberlyn Duncan grabbed her own WL in the women's 200 at 22.54, and Charlene Lipsey took over the U.S. lead in the 800m with her 2:02.48

BIG 10 -- Casimir Loxsom of Penn State ran faster than the standing AR in the 600m, but his 1:15.42 isn't eligible for record consideration due to the oversize track at the SPIRE Institute. In the heptathlon, Wisconsin's Japheth Cato moved to No. 6 on the all-time collegiate list with his 6,090 point PR.

SOUTHLAND -- Oral Roberts PV ace Jack Whitt cleared a U.S-best 5.61m/18-4.75.

SUMMIT LEAGUE -- South Dakota's string of pole vault success continued with Bethany Buell climbing to No. 8 on the all-time American collegiate list with her 4.41m/14-5.5 effort.

CHERRY PICKS UP HSR IN 300
Michael Cherry of Chesapeake (Va.) Smith broke a 27-year-old high school record in the 300m at the Virginia state meet Feb. 23, clocking 33.05 to trim the old mark of 33.19 by William Reed in '86.

BURRELL A CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK
Texas high schooler Cameron Burrell certainly has the heritage to become a great sprinter, as his dad set the 100m WR in the 90s and his mom was a standout for Florida State. He moved to second on the prep all-time list at the Brooks Invitational meet in Seattle Feb. 24 with a 6.61 in the 60m, no doubt making his dad/future collegiate coach smile.

Sasha Wallace (California) and Dior Hall (Colorado) waged a spirited battle in the 60mH, with Wallace climbing to third on the all-time prep list with an 8.18 to Hall's 8.21.
