CAS reverses IOC decision on U.S. relay medals

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (Reuters) – Seven members of the U.S. women's 2000 Olympic 4x100 and 4x400 meters relay teams can keep their medals from the Sydney Games, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said on Friday.

The ruling overturned a 2008 International Olympic Committee (IOC) executive committee decision to strip the athletes of their medals after relay team member Marion Jones admitted she had used a banned substance during the Games.

Seven members of the relay teams appealed and CAS said the IOC decision had been reversed based on IOC and International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) rules applicable at the time.

USATF statement on CAS decision regarding the 2000 Olympic women's relays

Statement
from USATF President Stephanie Hightower and CEO Doug Logan on the
Court of Arbitration for Sport's decision that the 2000 U.S. Olympic
women's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams not be disqualified:

Although
USATF was not a party to this case, we are sympathetic to any clean
athlete who was robbed of something because of Marion Jones' cheating:
competitors, teammates, fans and anyone who strives for fair
competition. The sport, its rules and how we deal with the consequences
of doping have evolved rapidly and forcefully since 2000, and this type
of situation will never again happen. We can all now look forward and
continue our efforts to ensure a clean sport.
