2/6/2014

INDIANAPOLIS -- The 2014 USATF Championships series kicks off this weekend as the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix brings youth, masters and elite athletes to the Reggie Lewis Center on the campus of Roxbury Community Collegein Boston, Saturday, Feb. 8.

Olympic silver medalist Galen Rupp headlines a solid list of competitors. Rupp has set two American records in the last month. He overtook the men’s 5,000m indoor record in 13:01.26 at the Boston University Multi-Team Meet, Thursday, Jan. 16., and he reset the two-mile indoor record Jan. 25 at the Boston University Terrier Invitational.  He’ll face off against 2012 Olympian Lopez Lomong, Olympic silver medalist Leo Manzano and New Zealand’s Nick Willis

The women’s competition is equally as strong as Mary Cain and Ajee´ Wilson are fresh faces in the women’s 1000 meters competing against veterans Treniere MoserSarah Brown and Molly Beckwith. Cain turned in the fastest mile in the world in 2014 with a time of 4:24.11, joining teammate Rupp in record-breaking performances at Boston University’s Terrier Invitational. She also set the world junior record in the 1,000m in 2:39.25.

Wilson is poised to have an impressive 2014 season after a breakout year in 2013. Wilson was a member of Team USA at the IAAF World Outdoor Championships, making the final of the women’s 800m and finishing sixth in 1:58.21.

Indoor world record holder Jenn Suhr opens 2014 in Boston. Suhr set the indoor pole vault WR at the 2013 USA Indoor Track & Field Championships, clearing 5.01m/16-5.50. Suhr took home the silver medal in the pole vault at last year’s IAAF World Outdoor Championships.
