Ryan Whiting Smashes New Zealand Shot Put Record in Christchurch

Double indoor world champion Ryan Whiting looked at ease today as he broke the New Zealand shot put record and, in the process, won the Big Shot competition in Christchurch.

His throw, of 21.03 metres, was the longest distance thrown by any shot putter on New Zealand soil, beating the previous mark of 20.79m set by Timaru's Tom Walsh, who was also competing at the event.

"I'm happy to have it" said Whiting "I feel like I threw pretty well considering we practiced probably five or ten degrees warmer the last couple of days and coming in and getting used to this is just something we have to do. I got to win so I can't complain."
