Fifteen reigning Olympians highlight Team USA DecaNation squad

8/13/2012

London Olympic women’s high jump silver medalist Brigetta Barrett and men’s 100-meter dash bronze medalist Justin Gatlin will lead a group of Team USA members, which includes 15 members of the recent Olympic squad, into the ninth edition of the DecaNation meet Wednesday in Albi, France.

Barrett and Gatlin, who also took silver as part of the American record setting 4x100m, are part of a 20-person team that includes 2012 Olympic gold medalists Lauryn Williams and Keshia Baker in the 4x100m and 4x400m, respectively. Team USA will square off in the DecaNation gainst teams from France, Russia, England, China, Germany, Spain and South Africa. Team USA has won six of the eight previous DecaNation events and will look to continue the momentum it gained from a performance in London that saw the most American medals (29) at an Olympics since 1992.

Additional 2012 Olympians competing in Albi include: Kyle Alcorn (3,000m steeplechase), Amber Campbell (hammer throw), Jillian Camarena-Williams (shot put), Hyleas Fountain (long jump), Bridget Franek (3,000m steeplechase), Kibwe Johnson (hammer throw), George Kitchens (long jump), Derek Miles (pole vault), Alysia Montano (800m), Shannon Rowbury (1,500m) and Nick Symmonds (800m).

Also on the DecaNation squad is Will Leer (1,500m), Christina Manning (100m hurdles), Cory Martin (shot put), Calvin Smith (400m) and American record holder and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist David Oliver (110m hurdles).

Steve Simmons will serve as the team leader and coach for the event with Terri Crawford performing duties as the women’s coach and Robyn Johnson working as an assistant.

The DecaNation is an annual track and field meet organized by the French Athletics Federation since 2005. The competition comprises national teams of athletes competing in one of ten events with a team score kept to determine a winner.
