Considering that four decades ago the universe for United States track and field essentially was the West Coast, specifically California, you probably couldn’t have chosen a more secluded outback to be included than Baker, Florida.

That’s precisely where high school student Houston McTear diverted the spotlight when he equaled the fastest sprint time in history at the state track meet in 1975. McTear’s 9.0 clocking for the 100-yard dash not only brought him instant notoriety, it began a series of events that would forever alter his life.
