Bath athlete won BUCS 60m hurdles gold before going on to clock a PB of 7.71 in Metz

A busy week has paid off for sprint hurdler David King who won his first BUCS indoor title on Friday before running a 60m hurdles PB of 7.79 the following day at the Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix and then lowering that mark to 7.71 at a meeting in Metz on Wednesday.

Speaking after he upgraded his 2014 BUCS 60m hurdles silver to 2015 gold in Sheffield, the 20-year-old said: “I do feel as if I ve put a marker down in winning BUCS. Lawrence (Clarke, his training partner) could have been here but he was concentrating on Birmingham.

The University of Bath athlete added: “If he had been in Sheffield it might have been a different story but you can only beat who s in front of you so I m happy.

“I was really happy with my heats. The final went ok, it was nothing special but to win it is amazing and I feel like I ve proved myself.

“BUCS is a really important competition and I m happy to come away with the gold.”

Looking to the summer, King believes he is capable of not only securing a place on the team going to the European Under-23 Championships in Tallinn but also making a statement.

“I have got the European Under-23s this year and I want to do well there, not just get on the team but go and run fast,” he said.

“I want to be in the 7.7s and get that consistency in my racing but I am feeling good about the season ahead.”

British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) is the governing body for Higher Education sport in the UK, representing 170 institutions and facilitating 52 sport programmes.
