Double Olympic champion set to return to action at the Diamond League meeting on July 17

Mo Farah is set to race the likes of Asbel Kiprop and Taoufik Makhloufi over 1500m at the Herculis meeting in Monaco on July 17, organisers have confirmed.

It is due to be the double Olympic, world and European track champion’s first race since doping allegations were made against his coach, Alberto Salazar, with those allegations aired in a BBC Panorama programme on June 3.

Farah had been due to compete at the Birmingham Diamond League meeting on June 7 but withdrew saying he was “emotionally and physically drained” and that he would be returning to the US to seek answers from Salazar.

Salazar has denied any wrongdoing, while there is no suggestion that Farah has violated any rules. On Friday Farah published a statement on Facebook, saying that the last two weeks “have been the toughest of my life”.

Farah last raced in Monaco in 2013, when he clocked 3:28.81 to break the 16-year-old European record behind Kiprop’s 3:27.72 – a time that remains the two-time world champion’s PB and puts him at fifth on the world all-time list.

You can read an AW report of Farah’s record-breaking run, which also beat Steve Cram’s 28-year-old British record, here.

Olympic champion Makhloufi has a 1500m best of 3:30.40 and set two of his previous PBs in Monaco – his 3:30.80 coming just before he won his London 2012 gold.

World silver medallist Matthew Centrowitz, 2008 Olympic silver medallist Nick Willis and 2012 European champion Henrik Ingebrigtsen are also among those set to compete.

Farah is then due to race at the London Diamond League meeting a week later.
