Is this Britain's Usain Bolt? Schoolboy breaks 400m record in only his second race - mirror.co.uk

A schoolboy has been dubbed the UK's version of three-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt after smashing a national record in just his second race.

Clovis Asong had only run a 400m race once in his life - but he still smashed a national schools record.

The sensational newcomer slashed more than a second off the under-15s schools record, at 48.86 seconds.

The adult world record for the last 10 years has been held by Michael Johnson, at 43.18 seconds.

Clovis had just one training session.

His time broke the previous English schools under-15s record by more than a second.

Bolt holds the world records for the 100m and 200m, at 9.58secs and 19.19 secs. He achieved a personal best of 48.28 in the 400 metres when he was 15 - just 0.58 seconds faster than Clovis has achieved a year younger.

The only other time he ran a 400m race, Clovis became Manchester schools champion.

Mum Beatrice Efuet said she was `so proud' to watch her son -a pupil at Our Lady's Sports College in Higher Blackley, Manchester - in his record-breaking run at the championships in Sheffield.

"I never push him to train," Beatrice, from Blackley, said.

"But he has a natural talent. He just loves to do it. He already is a great role model to his brothers and I hope he will be a great inspiration to other young people."

Danny Gray, Clovis's coach at Sale Harriers athletics club, said he could never have predicted the youngster would break the record so easily.
