Series of track races for grassroots and elites on offer at Saturday’s inaugural festival

Around 125 runners including Scott Overall and Stevie Stockton are among those set to race at the inaugural British Milers Club/Run Britain 10,000m Track Festival hosted by Trafford AC in Manchester on Saturday (September 6).

The event, held in conjunction with the Northern Athletics 10,000m Championships, takes place at Longford Park s track and forms part of the Run Britain Grand Prix Series.

Following on from the success of the Highgate 10km event in May, the festival aims to cater for recreational athletes through to those at elite level, with the men s and women s ‘A 10,000m races to be paced. Earlier this year, organisers announced how music and special guests had been planned to help spice up” the Trafford meeting, while spectators will also be able to get up close to the action and cheer on the athletes from lane 4.

“A few days ago we had around 125 entries men and women combined and I am pretty happy with that,” said meeting organiser Steve Green.

“The concept will be similar to the meeting at Highgate earlier this season with the crowd allowed on the track to encourage and support the runners and there may also be some music.

“As well as some experienced 10,00m runners there will be plenty doing it for the first time so hopefully we will see some really good runs and possibly a few breakthroughs in addition to lots of personal bests.”

Overall will start as favourite in a men s race in which Nick Torry and Dave Norman are also entered. A 1500m steeplechase for both men and women and a men’s mile event are also due to be held.

Tim Brennan, chairman of the BMC, said: “This meeting fits in with our commitment to enhancing opportunities for elite distance athletes, and those who just want to go out there and run a 10km track time.”
