GB women fill three of top four spots to grab team gold as male team-mates bag bronze in Doha

Britain’s Ellie Greenwood regained the IAU 100km World Championships title she won in 2010 on Friday evening, while USA’s Max King claimed victory in the men’s event in Doha, Qatar.

Joined by team-mates Joasia Zakrzewski and Jo Meek in the top four, Greenwood led GB to women’s team gold ahead of Japan and Russia, while Britain’s men bagged team bronze behind USA and Japan.

Greenwood, who also became the first British woman to win the Comrades Marathon earlier this year, eventually finished not far off eight minutes clear with her 7:30:48 for victory. The 35-year-old had moved into the lead at around the halfway point and gradually increased her advantage ahead of Japan’s Chiyuki Mochizuki who ran 7:38:23 to prevent a GB clean sweep. Zakrzewski clocked 7:42:02 for bronze ahead of Meek with 7:43:37.

King, making his competitive debut over the distance on the road, ran 6:27:43 to claim the men’s title ahead of Sweden’s Jonas Budd who clocked 6:32:04 for his fourth silver at the event. Bronze went to Spain’s Jos Antonio Requejo with 6:37:01.

Joining King in the top 10, Zach Bitter and Zach Miller helped secure USA the team title, while Hideo Nojo in fourth led Japan to team silver.

Paul Giblin was best of the Brits, his 6:56:12 placing him 11th as Steve Way, who had gone into the race as the second quickest on paper from times recorded in the past four years, struggled with stomach problems but ran 6:57:23 for 13th to help the team to bronze. Craig Holgate’s 7:04:16 for 16th sealed the medals as Paul Martelletti ran 7:09:39 for 19th.

“Well I’m out of the loo!!” Way tweeted after the race. “Sorry to disappoint everyone but after stomach malfunction, just glad to get to the finish.”
