English Schools athletes set for Cross CupPublished by
A look ahead to this weekend’s English Schools Cross Country Cup in NewquayThe English Schools Cross Country Cup returns to Newquay on the north Cornwall coast on Saturday. When the event was last held there five years ago, winners included Charlotte Cayton-Smith (pictured above in action) from the host school Newquay Tretherras and the youngster went on to win national 800m titles indoors and out this year. Along with Jemma Simpson, Dave Buzza, Emma Stepto and Miranda Heathcote, Cayton-Smith is one of several local international athletes due to attend as guests. They will watch junior and inter races for under-14 and under-16 athletes respectively on the undulating school fields. Northampton School for Boys returns to defend its junior boys title, while Aylesbury High School will be looking to hang on to the junior girls title and Putney High School the inter girls. Last year’s inter boys winner Dr Challoner s Grammar School is this year represented by just a junior team. The local rounds of the Cup started in October, with nearly 1500 teams from over 500 schools in England competing against other local schools in their county. This was followed by regional finals and now this weekend’s final. Site layout and a course map can be found here, along with a full list of the teams in action.
