Former world champion awarded a CBE for services to sport as Dame Mary Peters and Wendy Sly are also among those to receive recognition

Steve Cram, Dame Mary Peters and Wendy Sly have been named on the New Year Honours list.

Former world champion, world record breaker and Olympic silver medallist Cram has been awarded a CBE for services to sport, the 54-year-old receiving recognition for work done as chair of the English Institute of Sport.

Cram, who claimed the world 1500m title in Helsinki in 1983 before winning Olympic silver in Los Angeles over the same distance a year later, was made an MBE in 1986. That was the year he won the second of his two European titles and also claimed double Commonwealth gold over 800m and 1500m in Edinburgh.

Also among those to receive recognition are Cram’s fellow former athletes Peters and Sly.

Peters, who won pentathlon gold at the 1972 Olympic Games, becomes a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour for services to sport and to the community in Northern Ireland, with the 75-year-old having been made a Dame in 2000.

Sly, who won Olympic 3000m silver in 1984, has been made an MBE for services to athletics.

The success of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games was also recognised, with chief executive of Commonwealth Games Scotland Jon Doig receiving an OBE and Glasgow City Council leader Gordon Matheson a CBE.

Marathon runner Fauja Singh, who is now 103 years of age, receives a British Empire Medal for services to sport and charity. Coaches Janice Hendrie and Alan Rowling both receive the same honour for services to sport and wellbeing in Inverclyde and services to athletics in Cornwall respectively.
