First Ekiden of Paris Proves Big Success

Published by European Athletics on November 4, 2013

Over 1200 runners split into 226 teams were present for the highly anticipated first edition of the Ekiden of Paris which was held on Sunday October 3 in the heart of the French capital.

The event attracted all kinds of different people: students, working professionals; avid runners as well as beginners were all present to celebrate together.

More than the actual result, it was the atmosphere that was much appreciated by those involved. The weekend was dedicated to theme of health and well-being, with different activities being offered to the public, such as a Nordic-walking clinic.

As the first group of runners started, they were cheered on by spectators found by the side of the road, as well as their team-mates anxiously waiting for their turn to run.

The Ekiden originated in Japan and allows participants to cover the distance of a marathon in a team-relay format. Dividing the distance renders the race more accessible to amateur runners.

“Running is a solitary sport, but this Ekiden format gives us the opportunity to share the experience,” said Team RMC.

The weather this year was terrific, blue skies and sunshine let the contestants appreciate the scenery Paris has to offer.

The track started near the Louvre passing alongside the Seine and its’ magnificent bridges, arriving at the place de la Bastille, one of Paris’ most renowned squares.

The race was won without surprise by the Japanese National Team in 2:15:13. This experienced team was impressed with the organisation of the event.

“We are not used to being cheered-on this much in Japan, and the monuments throughout the course are so beautiful,” said a member of the winning Japanese National Team.
