A look ahead to Anglo Celtic Plate 100km action in Kent this weekend

Some of the country’s top ultra runners will head to the Cyclopark in Kent on Saturday for the National 100km and 50km events.

The annual Anglo Celtic Plate trophy race incorporates a team competition between England, Scotland and Wales as well as an open event.

The 20th edition sees Steve Way heading the start list, although with hopes of Commonwealth selection in the marathon he is not planning to go full out.

The Bournemouth runner ran a world-class 6:40:14 last year on his 100km debut and showed his current form with a big PB of 2:16 in the Virgin Money London Marathon three weeks ago.

The presence of Belgian sub-seven-hour ultra runner Pieter Vermeersch may mean he will have to work harder than he would have liked to take victory.

Running for England will be Craig Holgate, Andrew James and Andrew Hayden, who have run close to the seven-hour mark.

In the women’s race England’s Karen Rushton and Helen Taranowski and Wales’ Jen Salter are among the contenders.

The event will act as a trial for the IAU 100km World Championships being held next year, while the national 50km championships will be held at the same time on the 2.1km loop.
